Vaccination Requirements
Providing proof of vaccinations at or before the scheduled date of boarding is the owner’s responsibility. Highland Kennel reserves the right to refuse any guest who does not meet these standards or appears to be in poor health. Please plan accordingly.
Veterinary records can be provided in the following ways:
- Bring a legible copy to the kennel
- Have the vet fax a copy to: (732) 534-4994
- E-mail a copy to us
- We can call your vet to verify, available only during business hours

Rabies — Dogs and Cats
- Required by NJ state law for both dogs and cats.
- Rabies is diagnosed through microscopic examination of the brain. There is no treatment, and once symptoms develop in humans, the disease is fatal. Survival cases in dogs are extremely rare, making vaccination essential.
Distemper/Parvo Combo (DHP, DHLP, etc.) — Dogs Only
- Required for all dogs.
- Distemper affects multiple body systems, causing nasal and eye discharge, coughing, diarrhea, vomiting, and seizures. Puppies under six months are most vulnerable.
- Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) is highly contagious and often causes bloody diarrhea. It is the most common infectious disorder in U.S. dogs.
Bordetella — Dogs Only
- Recommended but not required.
- Also known as canine or kennel cough, this vaccine is only partially effective. Protection may take up to four days, and dogs can remain contagious for six or more days.
- Dogs vaccinated fewer than ten days before boarding cannot be accepted.
- Fresh air is a key factor in preventing Bordetella, especially in indoor/outdoor kennels like ours.
Feline Distemper — Cats Only
- Required for all cats.
- Feline Distemper (Panleukopenia) and Rabies are mandatory vaccinations. Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures, often fatal in young, unvaccinated kittens. Most cats are exposed within their first year of life.
Puppies’ Protection
- Puppies must complete their first full round of permanent shots before boarding, typically around 5–6 months of age.
- After that, vaccinations continue annually.
